Provost Summer Research Grants for CoTA

Approved by the Research Committee on January 30, 2009; modified and approved by the Provost on February 3, 2009; and by the Directors’ Council on February 4, 2009

Below, please find a second draft in answer to the Provost’s comments regarding the schedule, eligibility, application, review/selection criteria and final assessment which were discussed by the CoTA Research Committee.

Schedule

  • February 2 – Official announcement made to CoTA faculty concerning the professional development opportunity offered through the Provost Summer Research Grants which will total $50,000. The official announcement will indicate that the maximum grant request cannot exceed $7,500. Additionally, the grants will be funded from E&G state funds and therefore are restricted to university purchasing guidelines and salary processes. If funds are used for summer salary please note that ~26% of the funds will be applied to benefits thus reducing the actual salary dollars available. Once awarded, recipients will be advised to consult with the unit budget manager and Director on the approved university purchasing guidelines.
  • March 24 – Applicants will submit electronic application to the College (See Application Guidelines below). Applications will be submitted to Darlene Robel (drobel@arts.usf.edu) in the Dean’s Office.
  • March 26 – Nomination packets distributed (via website) to CoTA Research Committee members
  • April 10 – CoTA Research Committee meets to review and make selection recommendations. (Meeting is scheduled from 9 a.m. – Noon - in the Dean’s Conference Room).
  • April 10 – Submit recommended 2009 Provost’s Summer Grant recipients to the Dean.
  • April 15 – Dean Announces Recipients
  • April 15 – September 2, 2009 - Grant Timeframe - (Exceptions to the ending period may be considered).

 

Eligibility

  • An applicant must be a tenured or tenured-earning faculty member.
  • The faculty member must have demonstrated an active research/creative activity agenda that has been rated Outstanding (by unit committee and/or Director) in the most recent completed annual evaluation.

Application Guidelines

  • Applicants may submit only one application per grant cycle.
  • Applicants will submit (electronically) an application packet which includes the following: (Note: Maximum application length is 2 pages typed, double-spaced) for the narrative of items 1 – 5.)
    1. statement of the proposal,
    2. description of the project (or methodology),
    3. schedule for the project,
    4. method of evaluation upon completion of the project, and
    5. statement of how the outcomes of the project will support University and College primary performance indicators.
    6. proposed budget - amount requested should be included (maximum one page), Discuss any other support awarded or pending funding for this work. Include amount, source, funding period and expected notification date (if pending).

Review/Selection Criteria

  • The following criteria will be used by the CoTA Research Committee to evaluate the applications. Each of these criteria will be ranked according to a point system (outlined below):

  • Research committee reviews applicant packets and recommends award recipients to the Dean.

Assessment/Evaluation:

Using the criteria for selection, the Recipient will create a narrative evaluation assessing the outcomes of the project.

* the Committee will take into consideration success reflected in outcomes of previous grants and output in previous years.
